Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, or just simply La Boqueria, is one of the biggest public markets in the centre of Barcelona, just off from La Rambla (Ciutat Vella district). There was already a market on the spot in 1217, but in its current form the market was only opened in 1840. Today it hosts a wide range of goods, mostly fresh produce such as vegetables and fruits, as well as meat products, fish and poultry. It is a rather touristy place, nevertheless it is very worth a visit even if you’re not planning to buy your groceries here. There are many bistros and bars to have a bite and a drink, and to observe the action.
